It’s been such a crazy, disheartening weekend preceded by an equally unprecedented and frustrating week. Welcome to the new normal! Thanks, Trump! (And Bannon…) We can get through it though and we have several priorities to get us going.
First, a request. Five Minutes has grown incredibly in the past week. But, we think the impact can grow more. So, this week, in addition to your #FiveMinutes, get a friend, co-worker, or family member to do a #FiveMinutes too. Choose someone you like; do it with them at lunch or maybe when you’re walking to a meeting. If the numbers are programmed into your phone, then hand the phone off to your friend. It’s that easy. I’m going to call my mom and tell her to contact her senators about DeVos! (Get ready, mom!)
We’ve discussed these issues before, but the Senate moves slowly so we still need to focus on these issues this week.
- As Hanaa has so eloquently written about this weekend, we need to call about Trump’s Muslim ban. Very few Republicans have come out strongly against it. (See, for example, yesterday’s post on Senator Manchin’s (D-WV) Facebook page. Great Priorities!). There are many other actions over at Hanaa’s post, for example, donations or letter writing. Also read her recommendation to call your MOC in regards to enforcing the EO, or writing legislation to overturn it.
- As we’ve discussed several times as well, the DeVos HELP committee vote is January 31. According to the Washington Post, the vote likely will go her way. But there is still time to put pressure on the Senators. Particularly if you live in one of the states with a Republican Senator on the HELP committee, CALL. (Protip: If you don’t live in one of those states, but have friends who do, encourage them to call!) You are in a unique position to make a real difference on the vote, and it’s an excellent opportunity to use your plus one. Either way, we all need to call our Senators (perhaps again) to remind them why she is so completely unfit and unqualified.
- The committee vote for Jeff Sessions as AG is also up on Tuesday. Once again, that means we need to call and remind the Senate Judiciary Committee members why his record means he cannot be trusted to uphold the Constitution of the United States fairly for all Americans.
It is a lot to ask, we know, but we also know that so many of us marched just one week ago (which seems like an eternity ago now…). Whether you were there or not, we have all committed to ensuring the values and vision for our country is not fundamentally altered by a Cheeto-faced buffoon and his evil cronies. That means we act. And this week, we #FiveMinutes together.
