Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) is the nominee for the Secretary of Health and Human Services. This is not good.
Let’s break down who and what Tom Price hates:
ETHICS. Tom Price has, on multiple occasions, bought or sold stock, then actively introduced or sponsored legislation that benefited those trades. Expect this to be the primary issue up for discussion during his hearing.
WOMEN. Tom Price led the Republican fight against Obamacare. In 2012, ThinkProgress asked Price specifically about contraception coverage and how repealing Obamacare would affect women, especially low-income women. Price responded, “Bring me one woman who has been left behind. Bring me one. There’s not one.” He was serious!
27 percent of all women and 44 percent of low-income women in the U.S. who use birth control get it from a publicly funded clinic, like Planned Parenthood. No surprise, Price is one of the loudest voices trying to defund Planned Parenthood, actually introducing legislation to do so. (And no surprise he has a zero percent rating from PP.)
Price’s anti-choice actions go beyond the norm. He has co-sponsored personhood legislation at the federal level, which would have effectively banned emergency contraception, IUDs, and IVF. He voted against Washington, DC’s law protecting women from employment discrimination for using birth control or having an abortion. (Yes, in addition to having no vote in Congress, Congress has the right to decline any law we pass.)
CIVIL RIGHTS. On protecting the trans community, Price stated, “It is absurd that we need a ‘federal restroom policy’ for our nation’s schools. This is yet another abuse and overreach of power by the #ObamaAdministration, and a clear invasion of privacy.” Meanwhile, “82% of transgender youth report that they feel unsafe at school [and] 44% of them had been abused physically (ex. punched, shoved, etc.).”
When marriage equality became the law, Price responded, “[It is] not only a sad day for marriage, but a further judicial destruction of our entire system of checks and balances.”
Tom Price voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which President Obama signed into law and now adds sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes. He also voted against the Violence Against Women’s Act.
The list goes on.
